The message, which made no mention of McConnell, vanished minutes after she first posted it and then reappeared about an hour and a half later.

The timing of the post heightened interest because McConnell, 84, had been out of public sight for roughly three months. On June 14 he was reportedly hospitalized after emergency responders were dispatched to his home; contemporary accounts say CPR was performed for a suspected cardiac event. At the time, Chao was traveling in China and did not immediately return. Her office later said McConnell's condition "did not warrant an immediate return to the U.S."
