Concha, who recently began hosting The Big Weekend Show on Fox News, criticized McConnell's prolonged time away from the Capitol and said on air that if the senator did not resume his duties by September he should resign. The host also expressed frustration with staged public appearances, saying he did not want to see more "proof of life" photos and urged McConnell to address the Senate directly to demonstrate he can perform the job.
McConnell was hospitalized in mid‑June after a fall and later developed pneumonia. He released a photo after about a month in the hospital showing him seated next to his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, and issued a brief health update. In that statement, McConnell said doctors confirmed he had not suffered broken bones, a concussion, a heart attack, a stroke, tumors or hemorrhages, but that he had been briefly unconscious and was treated in the hospital.
In August, McConnell's office said he would "maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy" at home on a doctor’s advice as part of his recovery. The senator has not returned to the Senate floor, prompting questions from colleagues, commentators and the public about the timing of his return and his readiness to resume full leadership duties.
