Zack Polanski, leader of the Green Party and a member of the London Assembly, has been chosen as the Greens' candidate for the Holborn and St Pancras parliamentary by-election on 8 October.
Polanski was selected by members of the Camden Green Party, winning the local contest over councillor Hamza Chowdhury. The selection sets up a high-profile contest in an inner London constituency that Labour has long held.
"We might be the underdog in this election but we have the momentum and we can win," Polanski said after his selection.
Labour has represented Holborn and St Pancras since the constituency was created in 1983. Labour's candidate for the by-election is Camden Council leader Sagal Abdi-Wali.
The seat became vacant after Sir Keir announced he was standing down as an MP to focus on a role in international affairs, prompting the October by-election. The result will test whether the Greens can close the gap in a traditional Labour stronghold.
