Lib Dem councillor to contest Starmer's seat
The Liberal Democrats have chosen Camden councillor Patrick Stillman as their candidate for the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, scheduled for 8 October. The vacancy followed Sir Keir Starmer's resignation from Parliament after he accepted a role in international affairs.
Stillman, elected earlier this year to represent the West Hampstead ward, is the outgoing chair of Camden Liberal Democrats. He said he was proud to have been selected and set out a campaign focused on housing, local safety and giving young Londoners a fair chance to build a life in the capital.
"Voters here deserve better than a Labour government in chaos, or a Green Party using this seat to prop up its leader's ambitions," Stillman said. "We have a distinct, confident liberal message — on housing, on safety, on giving young Londoners like me a fair shot at building a life here — and I'm going to make that case on every doorstep between now and 8 October."
Campaign and Candidates
Stillman will face a competitive field: Camden Council leader Sagal Abdi-Wali is standing for Labour, Green Party leader Zack Polanski is the Green candidate, and former Conservative councillor Ewan Cameron will contest for the Conservatives. Observers expect the contest to attract national attention as parties seek to measure their standing in inner London.
Nominations close at 16:00 BST on Tuesday. Campaigning is expected to centre on housing, public safety and opportunities for young people.
