Golden State Medical Dominance: Six California Hospitals Make U.S. News 2026–27 Top 20 Honor Roll

California is enjoying a major medical moment. In the newly released 2026–27 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings, six California medical centers placed among the nation’s top 20, giving the state more Honor Roll spots than any other.

The six California hospitals earning Honor Roll status span the state from the Bay Area to Southern California:

• Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles)
• Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (Los Angeles)
• Stanford Health Care–Stanford Hospital (Palo Alto)
• UCSF Health–UCSF Medical Center (San Francisco)
• UC San Diego Health — La Jolla, Hillcrest and East Campus (San Diego)

Together, these six hospitals account for roughly 30% of all Honor Roll institutions in the U.S. News top-20 list — a clear lead over other states.

How the Rankings Were Determined

U.S. News evaluated nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide. The methodology considered survival rates, nursing quality, patient experience and specialty performance across 14 specialties and 23 procedures and conditions to produce both the Honor Roll and specialty rankings.

Regional Strengths

California’s dominance extended to regional and metro rankings. Los Angeles claimed 25 Best Regional Hospitals — second only to the New York City area, which had 28. At the metro level, Cedars-Sinai and UCLA Ronald Reagan led Los Angeles; UC Davis Medical Center topped Sacramento; UC San Diego Health led San Diego; and UCSF Health ranked highest in San Francisco.

Standout Hospital Performances

• Cedars-Sinai placed among the national top 50 in 10 specialties and earned the highest “High Performing” rating across all 23 procedures and conditions evaluated by U.S. News.
• UCSF Health marked its 30th consecutive year on the Honor Roll and had 10 specialties ranked among the nation’s top 10.

Patient Safety Recognition

California’s strong performance is echoed by other measures of safety and quality. In March, Healthgrades named 438 hospitals across 40 states to its 2026 Patient Safety Excellence Award list; California was among the states with the highest number of award-winning hospitals, alongside Texas, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Healthgrades’ analysis found these top-performing hospitals had significantly lower risks of serious safety events — such as falls resulting in fractures, procedure-related collapsed lungs, catheter-related bloodstream infections and pressure sores.

What This Means For Patients

U.S. News says the rankings can help Californians identify highly rated care closer to home. However, patients do not need to travel to an Honor Roll hospital for every condition: many regional hospitals earned high marks for specific specialties and procedures, and local expertise can often provide excellent care without long-distance travel.

Bottom line: California’s concentration of highly ranked hospitals highlights the state’s major medical hubs from San Diego to the Bay Area and Los Angeles, offering nationally recognized specialty care and strong patient-safety performance.
