Possible Explanations
DFS did not provide a definitive explanation for the nationwide rise. For BER, however, DFS suggested one possible factor: the Federal Police installed a new drone-detection system at the airport this year that may be identifying drones more quickly and reliably than previous systems. The Federal Police initially declined to comment on DFS's assessment.
Notable Security Incident
Separately, at Leipzig/Halle Airport an explosive-laden drone was discovered on the southern runway late Tuesday. Security sources said the device was found near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft. Federal Police specialists later defused the explosive device; no further details were released immediately.
Context: Authorities continue to weigh whether the increase reflects improved detection capabilities, a real rise in drone activity, or a mix of both. Investigations and enhanced countermeasures are expected as airports and security services adapt to the evolving risk.
