The White House on Wednesday issued a sharp rebuke after Marjorie Taylor Greene and Tucker Carlson teamed up with Rep. Thomas Massie (R‑Ky.) and former National Counterterrorism Center head Joe Kent to signal plans for a new "America First" political party.
In a statement shared with Wired, White House spokesperson Davis Ingler described the group as an "embarrassing collection of mostly whiny turncoats" who "dramatically overestimate their influence and relevance." Ingler also reaffirmed the administration's view that "President Trump created the greatest political movement in the history of politics with the MAGA movement, and he remains the unequivocal leader of the Republican Party," adding that the president is focused on preserving Republican majorities in Congress and lowering costs for working families.
The Photo That Sparked the Response
Four days earlier, Greene posted a photograph showing herself, Carlson, Kent and Massie seated around a wooden table sharing chocolate-chip cookies and milk. Greene framed the image as more than a casual get-together, writing, "We said no more foreign wars and we meant it and supported Donald Trump because he made that promise. But he's betrayed us all." She concluded her post with: "The movement has begun."
Carlson's Third-Party Push
Tucker Carlson has said he is working to "help build" a third party, arguing that both Republicans and Democrats are too preoccupied with foreign policy while the lives of average Americans suffer. In June, Carlson said he was finished voting for Republicans; Greene made a similar declaration soon after.
Accusations and Responses
Carlson has repeatedly alleged that Trump’s 2024 campaign is backed heavily by donors with "loyalty to Israel," a claim the president has dismissed. Speaking in March about the prospect of conflict with Iran, Trump quipped, "If anything, I might've forced Israel's hand."
