Audi S5-Driving Teen Hits 140 MPH in Chase: CopsDurham Constabulary

Durham Constabulary released dashcam footage showing a 17‑year‑old in a suspected stolen Audi S5 reach speeds of about 140 mph on narrow UK country roads. Officers from the Roads and Armed Policing unit coordinated a planned response—deploying a spike strip near Thinford and repositioning units toward Metal Bridge—before boxing the car in after roughly six miles. The teen pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and burglary and remains remanded pending sentencing in October.

Dashcam footage released by Durham Constabulary captures a high‑speed, white‑knuckle pursuit on narrow country roads north of England, where a 17‑year‑old in a suspected stolen Audi S5 accelerated from roughly 70 mph to around 140 mph before officers boxed the car in and brought it to a halt.

The Incident

According to Durham's Roads and Armed Policing unit, officers were alerted in late June to a suspected stolen Audi S5 near Rushyford. The teen driver failed to stop and the car rapidly picked up speed on roads that are barely wide enough for two vehicles. The pursuit included several tight junctions and roundabouts, and at one point the driver briefly took the wrong side of a roundabout while still travelling at high speed.

Police Response and Coordination

What stands out in the clip is the methodical, coordinated policing rather than a single car tailing the Audi. Units repositioned strategically: one moved toward Thinford with instructions to deploy a spike strip, while others shifted toward Metal Bridge after the Audi doubled back. Radio traffic remained calm and professional throughout the chase as officers worked to gain containment.

Containment and Arrest

Officers made initial contact with the Audi, which appears to have damaged the front wheel; witnesses and officers later reported smoke as the pursuit continued at roughly 90 mph. A spike strip was deployed and damaged tyres did not immediately stop the vehicle. Ultimately several patrol cars, including BMW and Audi estate vehicles, manoeuvred to box the S5 in. After further controlled contact the Audi was forced to stop, ending a pursuit that covered about six miles.

Aftermath

Police searching the stopped vehicle reportedly found keys for a Ford, Mercedes, BMW and multiple Audis, with several keys attached to what appeared to be house key rings. The 17‑year‑old subsequently pleaded guilty to offences including dangerous driving and burglary and has been remanded in custody pending sentencing in October.

Why It Matters
High speeds on narrow rural roads dramatically increase the risk to other road users and officers. The footage underscores how coordinated policing and planned containment can bring dangerous pursuits to a safe conclusion.
