Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt plans to extend Germany's internal border checks beyond September after a mass arrival of migrants in Ceuta. He argued that “flexible and tailored checks” are needed to maintain progress against illegal migration, but gave no firm end date. Controls have been in place since 16 September 2024 and were initially ordered by former minister Nancy Faeser; they have already been extended multiple times, most recently to mid-September 2026.

Germany's Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has announced plans to keep internal border checks in place beyond September in response to a recent mass arrival of migrants in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta.

Context and Rationale

Dobrindt said the move is intended to preserve recent gains in reducing illegal migration by maintaining “flexible and tailored checks” at the EU's internal frontiers. He did not set a firm end date for the proposed extension, saying only that controls will be extended beyond September.

“The situation in Ceuta highlights the volatile nature of the illegal migration crisis,” Dobrindt said while explaining the decision.

Although EU internal borders are normally open, phased controls have been reintroduced at all of Germany’s external crossings since 16 September 2024. The initial reinstatement was ordered by former Interior Minister Nancy Faeser to curb unauthorised entries. Despite criticism, the measure has already been prolonged three times — most recently until mid-September 2026.

Ceuta Surge

Regional authorities estimate that roughly 60,000 migrants breached the border into Ceuta from Morocco in recent days, prompting concern across the EU and renewed calls for coordinated migration and border-management responses.
