Heavy, short-lived rainfall produced a flash flood at the Shuangshimen Scenic Area in Weiyuan County, Gansu Province, killing 10 people and injuring 23. Rescuers evacuated 174 others and the injured were hospitalized, state broadcaster CCTV reported. The incident occurred as parts of southern China were on flood alert after Typhoon Noul, and local authorities issued severe weather warnings.

A sudden flash flood triggered by intense, short-lived rainfall swept through the Shuangshimen Scenic Area in Weiyuan County, Dingxi City, Gansu Province on Sunday, killing 10 people and injuring 23, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

What Happened

Authorities said a 'mountain torrent' produced by heavy localized rain overwhelmed a popular camping site in the rugged, mountainous southern reaches of Gansu. The Shuangshimen Scenic Area, known for natural stone arches, alpine meadows and clear mountain streams, is a well-liked summer destination for campers and hikers.

Rescue and Medical Response

Local officials told CCTV that rescuers evacuated 174 additional people from the scene and that the injured were transported to hospitals for treatment. Emergency teams and local police responded quickly to the incident amid challenging terrain.

"The injured have been sent to the hospital for treatment and another 174 people have been rescued," CCTV quoted local officials as saying.

Weather Context and Warnings

Large parts of southern China were on high flood alert on Sunday after Typhoon Noul made landfall early that morning. Although much of Gansu is far from Noul's path, some areas of the province experienced heavy rain and flash floods, prompting local authorities to issue severe weather warnings and urge residents to stay indoors and follow safety guidance.

Ongoing Situation

Investigations and recovery operations are ongoing. Officials are assessing damage and monitoring weather forecasts for further heavy rainfall. Travelers and outdoor visitors in the region are advised to avoid flooded areas and follow directions from emergency services.
