At least 62 people have died and 46 were injured after three days of heavy rain and flooding in Uttar Pradesh, which damaged more than 1,000 homes and forced school closures in parts of the state including Lucknow. Rescue teams evacuated residents while officials warned against travel through waterlogged areas. The Bay of Bengal weather system has weakened, so heavy rainfall should ease though light showers may persist through Tuesday. Flooding also prompted the evacuation of 75,000+ people in Odisha, and neighbouring Nepal reported 21 deaths and substantial damage as it recovers from catastrophic August floods.

At least 62 people have died after three days of heavy rain and widespread flooding across northern India’s Uttar Pradesh state, officials said Monday. The state government reported 46 people injured and more than 1,000 houses damaged as persistent downpours inundated several districts.

Impact and Response

Schools were closed Monday in parts of the state, including the capital, Lucknow, while rescue teams moved residents from flooded neighbourhoods to higher ground and safer locations. Authorities urged people to avoid unnecessary travel through waterlogged areas and to stay away from fast-flowing rivers, streams and drains.

Flooding also affected the eastern state of Odisha, where officials said more than 75,000 people were evacuated to safer areas. Local agencies and state disaster response teams coordinated relief and evacuation efforts amid ongoing rainfall.

Regional Toll

In neighbouring Nepal, the country’s disaster management agency reported 21 deaths from weather-related incidents between Thursday and Sunday. Five people remain missing and five others were injured; floods and landslides damaged 194 houses. The country is still recovering from catastrophic August floods that killed more than 1,400 people and left nearly 6,000 missing.

Weather Outlook

Rainfall was expected to ease from Monday after a weather system over the Bay of Bengal weakened, said Atul Kumar Singh, a senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Lucknow. He cautioned that light rain could continue in eastern and western parts of the state through Tuesday.

Atul Kumar Singh, Regional Meteorological Centre, Lucknow: "The Bay of Bengal system has weakened, which should reduce heavy rainfall, but isolated light showers are still possible through Tuesday."

Authorities continue relief and assessment operations. Further updates on casualties and infrastructure damage are expected as teams complete surveys of affected areas.
