Diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war in Ukraine have recently been partially sidelined amid heightened tensions related to the conflict with Iran.
On Thursday in Manila, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Senator Marco Rubio discussed Moscow's war in Ukraine. Rubio later told reporters that fresh proposals and new ideas will be needed to make progress toward a negotiated peace.
Rubio highlighted heavy recent Russian losses and widespread suffering among the Ukrainian population, saying those factors create incentives for both sides to pursue an end to the conflict, which has continued since February 2022.
