The Confrontation
Ahir, 27, said she had been waiting for friends before joining the demonstration when she noticed the police van transporting detained young protesters. She approached officers and asked whether they had the proper paperwork to lawfully detain the demonstrators. Unsatisfied with the response, she walked beside the moving vehicle and, when she could no longer keep pace, stepped directly in front of it.
The standoff lasted about 40 minutes. Ahir said the driver revved the engine, which startled her, and that she considered the risk of detention or injury. Still, she refused to move until the detained protesters were released.
"I knew one thing," she said. "If I had started this, I had to end it."
