A tense SWAT standoff in Sacramento ended without injury after deputies used a reconnaissance drone and a robotic K9 to disarm and secure a suspect inside a garage.
What Happened
Authorities identified the suspect as 30-year-old Austin Carter, described by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office as a registered sex offender, a parolee-at-large and a convicted rapist with a history that included prior barricade incidents. Deputies from the Sheriff's Special Enforcement Detail (SWAT) responded after Carter was reported armed.
Negotiators attempted to make contact for an extended period but received no response. The sheriff's office said Carter allegedly consumed all of his drugs after noticing officers on scene and that he was later observed in a drug-induced condition during part of the standoff.
Drone And Robotic K9 Intervention
Members of the Sheriff's Craft Observation Utilizing Technology (SCOUT) Team deployed a reconnaissance drone into the residence to assess the situation safely. The drone located Carter curled up in a corner of the garage with one hand concealed beneath his body and the other visibly holding a knife.
To avoid exposing personnel to close-range danger in the confined space, deputies attached a powerful magnet to the underside of the drone and carefully used it to remove the knife from Carter's hand. After the knife was dislodged, the department deployed the robotic K9 Buster to move obstacles and clear a path to the garage.
Apprehension And Aftermath
Carter reportedly regained consciousness during the operation. Deputies advanced using the department's Rook armored rescue vehicle for ballistic protection. He refused repeated commands to surrender and was ultimately apprehended by Sheriff's K9 Beau, who took him into custody. No deputies were injured.
After receiving medical clearance, Carter was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail; officials said he was ineligible for bail. The sheriff's office released video coverage reported by Inside Edition and posted an official incident report through their channels.
