Claims, Arrests And Reactions
Trump alleged vandals used "chemicals" to damage the pool and, without presenting evidence, claimed someone used a "box-cutter or a knife of some kind" to cut a 350-foot "slit" across the pool floor — a distance roughly the length of a football field including end zones. Authorities have arrested several people in recent days, but there is no clear public evidence linking those arrests to the algae, the peeling paint, or the alleged "chemicals."
Nadine Seilert told WUSA: "The man put his hand and touched the peeling blue paint, and that’s what they’re calling vandalism."
Protesters have gathered at the Reflecting Pool to ridicule the project and the administration's handling of it. In his post, Trump also complained about a protest sign that read, "First they came for the algae," an allusion to Martin Niemöller's 1946 poem about the perils of political apathy and complicity.
