Officers responded just after 8 a.m. on Friday, June 12, to reports of an active shooter. The suspect, identified by the Texas Department of Public Safety as 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal of Odessa, barricaded himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic. More than three hours later, around 11:30 a.m., drone footage confirmed Villarreal was found dead inside the building following an hours-long standoff with law enforcement.
Authorities said Villarreal had been wanted on an attempted capital murder of a peace officer charge after a vehicle pursuit on June 10, during which shots were fired at a Midland police officer during a traffic stop. According to DPS, Villarreal fired several shots at officers and bystanders before retreating into the clinic.
No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident. Ten people were reported wounded; authorities have not released detailed information about their conditions. The Texas Rangers have taken the lead in investigating the shooting and the circumstances surrounding the suspect's death.
The person killed has been identified as Ed Scott, a City of Midland employee and a longtime member of the local softball community. City officials remembered Scott as a devoted husband and father, a friend and teammate to many, and an active participant in local and regional softball organizations.
