An international Lufthansa flight from San Francisco to Munich was diverted to Boston after a passenger allegedly assaulted another traveler midflight, forcing crew to take emergency action.
Lufthansa flight 459 departed San Francisco International Airport just after 10:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday, June 10, bound for Munich aboard an Airbus A380-800, according to FlightAware. About three hours into the flight—while the aircraft was over northern Manitoba, Canada—the flight turned sharply south toward the United States, initially heading in the direction of Chicago before being rerouted to Boston.

The Massachusetts State Police told PEOPLE that troopers were notified of a disturbance on the aircraft at about 8 a.m. local time. "A female party allegedly attacked another passenger and was handcuffed to her seat," the department said. The aircraft was diverted to Boston Logan International Airport and landed safely.
Authorities said it was unclear whether anyone was injured. The incident remains under active investigation, and police did not immediately confirm whether the suspect was arrested.

A Lufthansa spokesperson told local outlets the diversion was prompted by "an unruly passenger who posed a threat to the safe continuation of the flight," and reiterated that "the safety of all passengers and crew on board is always Lufthansa's top priority."
When the aircraft landed in Boston, the passenger was removed from the plane along with her luggage, the airline said. After refueling, the A380 resumed its transatlantic route and was expected to arrive in Munich just before 11:30 p.m. on June 11. FlightAware reported there were 508 passengers on board.
FAA Data And Penalties
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recorded 687 unruly passenger incidents so far this year, including 163 reports in May 2026. While unruly passenger reports have fallen about 80% from 2021 peak levels, the FAA has noted a recent uptick. When warranted, incidents are referred to the FBI and local law enforcement, and the FAA can propose civil penalties of up to $43,658 per violation. Last year the agency assessed roughly $2.3 million in fines related to unruly passenger behavior.
