How He Was Caught
Ngurah Rai Immigration Office officials said they became suspicious when a passenger presented a Brazilian passport under the name "GAM" and showed no record of entry or valid stay permit for Indonesia. Officers postponed the passenger's departure for further questioning, but the other travellers on the aircraft re-boarded without authorization and the plane began preparing for takeoff.

After the aircraft was forced back to the apron, immigration officers swept the plane and found the man concealed in the aircraft lavatory. Subsequent checks determined the Brazilian passport was counterfeit and the detainee's true identity was established as Angelo Pandeli, an Australian citizen born in Whyalla.
Allegations and Aftermath
On social media the Ngurah Rai office, citing Interpol, described Pandeli as an influential figure in a Transnational Serious Organized Crime (TSOC) network and a prominent member of an outlaw motorcycle gang. Indonesian authorities say he is suspected of involvement in large-scale narcotics smuggling into Australia and had been evading law enforcement for some time.

Pandeli was detained on Saturday, June 6, arrested by immigration authorities and subsequently deported to Australia. The Ngurah Rai Immigration Office also announced he has been banned from entering Indonesia for life.
