Indonesian authorities have arrested two Russian nationals suspected of smuggling nearly eight kilograms of hashish into Bali after a high-speed car chase in which the vehicle struck several pedestrians, officials said on Sunday.
The suspects — a 52-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man identified by their initials as KK and SK — were detained after allegedly trying to bring 7.8 kilograms (about 18 pounds) of hashish into the resort island in a suitcase from Thailand, the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) said in a statement.
"We have seized the evidence, 7.8 kilograms of hashish," said BNN chief Suyudi Ario Seto.
According to the agency, the woman arrived at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta airport before travelling to Bali in a rental car to meet the man at a seaport on Friday. BNN says the man picked up the woman and left her, along with the suitcase, at an undisclosed location before attempting to flee.
Officials pursuing the vehicle said the driver travelled at very high speed and recklessly, striking several local residents before police were able to stop the car and take both suspects into custody. The agency did not provide further details about any injuries to bystanders.
BNN posted photographs of the suspects and an image of the suitcase reportedly containing the seized drugs. An investigation is under way to determine whether the pair are linked to a larger trafficking syndicate.
Context and Legal Background
Indonesia enforces some of the world's toughest drug laws and retains the death penalty for serious trafficking offences, although a moratorium on executions has been in place for several years. The country last carried out capital punishment for drug offences in 2016, when one Indonesian and three Nigerians were executed by firing squad.
In December 2024, Indonesia removed Mary Jane Veloso from death row and returned her to the Philippines. The government also repatriated five remaining members of the "Bali Nine" drug ring to Australia, where they continue to serve long prison sentences.
Recent related cases include two British men who in March received nine- and 11-year prison terms after being convicted of smuggling cocaine into Bali, and a Peruvian woman arrested last August accused of attempting to hide cocaine in a sex toy and in her underwear.
