Polish authorities have seized more than one tonne of heroin in the Baltic port city of Gdynia, near Gdańsk, in what officials call one of the country's most significant anti-smuggling operations in recent years.
The haul, estimated at 220 million zloty (about $60 million), was recovered after a tip-off from British counterparts in March, the PAP news agency reported. Investigators say the consignment was expected from the United Arab Emirates and was concealed in shipping containers disguised as decorative bricks.
"This is the largest operation of its kind in more than 10 years," Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński told journalists.
Police have initiated criminal proceedings against three Polish suspects — two men and one woman — in connection with the smuggling. Authorities described the case as the result of international cooperation between Polish investigators and foreign law-enforcement partners.
Further inquiries are ongoing as prosecutors and customs officials work to establish the full network behind the shipment and any links beyond the reported UAE origin.
