Netze BW reported that the Reutlingen-West substation failed at 1:45 a.m. local time (23:45 GMT Sunday). Investigators found three separate fire sites at the facility and damage to the fence and surrounding grounds. The outage affected roughly 20,000 customers served by regional grid operator Fairnetz GmbH.
Within hours, power had been restored to about half of those customers, but by Monday morning some 7,600 households remained without electricity. Local officials said the blackout has already caused damage running into the millions of euros, according to the dpa news agency.
Investigation Underway
Police from the Criminal Investigation Office of Baden-Württemberg said they were exploring all possible causes and had brought in arson specialists to assist — a standard procedure for incidents of this scale, officials added. Netze BW said it was providing administrative support to help restore supplies.

Authorities noted similarities to previous attacks on power infrastructure in Berlin, including a September incident at a technology park and an attack on high-voltage cables on January 3 that produced the longest outage in the city's post-war history.
