A 20‑year‑old McDonald’s shift manager, Jacob Smith, remains in intensive care after a co‑worker allegedly threw hot oil on him while he was finishing a shift at a Northern California restaurant on June 6. Smith suffered second‑degree burns to the side of his face, neck, right arm and back and is scheduled for skin‑graft surgery.

What Happened
According to local authorities and family members, the attack occurred as Smith was preparing to end his shift and count the register. Yuba City police responders found him ambulatory and able to communicate but with obvious burn injuries to his upper torso and face.

Suspect Arrested
Investigators say the suspected attacker, 23‑year‑old Jalani Bluett, initially fled the scene but was located and arrested by the Sutter County Sheriff's Office shortly after midnight. During his June 6 arraignment, Lt. Michael Bullard said Bluett was held to answer on multiple serious charges — including assault with a deadly weapon, mayhem and felony assault resulting in great bodily injury — and is being held in Sutter County with no bail.

Victim's Condition and Response
Smith’s mother, Amber Smith, told reporters her son sustained second‑degree burns covering about 22% of his body. Doctors have described some burns as deep, and Smith is scheduled for skin graft surgery. Amber said her son’s pain has been severe enough that certain pain medicines cannot be administered outside the ICU.
"As much as I want to be angry, or want to hate people and be scared of people, it's just so hard to be when I have so many people showing their love for me," Jacob wrote from his hospital bed. "I'm not sad, and I'm not angry, and the pain doesn't cause me grief because I know it's necessary to heal. I'm so thankful for everybody."
The family has launched a GoFundMe to help cover medical expenses. McDonald’s had not responded to requests for comment at the time of reporting. Local law enforcement continues to investigate the incident.
Ongoing Legal Process
Authorities asked the public for assistance locating the suspect before his arrest, noting he was "considered at risk due to a diagnosis and vulnerabilities." The criminal case is ongoing and prosecutors will determine final charges as the investigation proceeds.
