Judge Denies Bond For Driver Accused In Wrong‑Way DUI That Killed Young USF Graduate

A Florida judge has ordered that 53‑year‑old Dennis Lee Olson be held without bond in Charlotte County after a wrong‑way crash on Interstate 75 on May 17 that killed 21‑year‑old University of South Florida graduate Lauryn Akey.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol and local news reports, investigators say Olson made an improper U‑turn into oncoming traffic and struck Akey’s vehicle and another car. Akey, who had been returning home from a wedding, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Charges, Alcohol Level, And Prior Record

Olson faces multiple charges, including DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide. Authorities reported his blood‑alcohol concentration was 0.222 — nearly three times Florida’s legal limit — and that he has a prior DWI conviction in Minnesota. Olson’s arraignment is scheduled for June 15, according to local reports.

Remembering Lauryn Akey

Family and friends have honored Akey’s memory online with the hashtag #LoveLikeLauryn, sharing stories about her warmth and future plans. After graduating from USF, she intended to pursue a career in nursing to help others.

“Though Lauryn’s time here was far too brief, she made a lasting impact on everyone blessed enough to know and love her,” reads part of Akey’s obituary. “She will be remembered for her bright personality, loving heart, contagious laughter, and the countless beautiful memories she created with family and friends.”

A celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, May 30, at Grace Community Church in Lakewood Ranch, Florida; attendees have been asked to wear “bright and cheerful colors” to reflect Akey’s personality. In a public post, Akey’s mother, Melinda Mucho, pleaded on Instagram: “Don’t drink and drive…please!”
