Fairfield County, Ohio — A 33-year-old man who federal authorities say was deported in 2020 has been charged after a suspected drunk-driving crash that killed a 23‑year‑old teacher who had recently become engaged.

Crash Details

Authorities say the collision occurred shortly after 6 p.m. on U.S. Route 33 when Alvaro Uribe‑Gonzalez's eastbound GMC Terrain drove off the right side of the road, overcorrected, crossed the median and overturned into the westbound lanes, striking a Chevrolet Trax driven by Cameron Lyon. The GMC reportedly caught fire. Lyon was treated at the scene and later died; his fiancée, Abrielle Kerns, 23, suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized in intensive care. Investigators said alcohol is suspected to have been a factor.

Charges And Custody

Uribe‑Gonzalez, a Mexican national, faces charges including aggravated vehicular homicide, driving under the influence and operating a motor vehicle without a valid license. He sustained minor injuries in the crash. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged a detainer with the Fairfield County Jail the day after his arrest, asking that local officials notify federal agents before any release so custody can be transferred.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says Uribe‑Gonzalez first entered the U.S. illegally through Texas in January 2020, received a final removal order on Jan. 11, 2020, and was deported to Mexico on April 14, 2020. Federal officials say he later reentered the United States at an unknown time and location. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said federal authorities want local cooperation with the detainer so removal proceedings can proceed if appropriate.

Lyon had recently begun his first teaching job at Crestline Exempted Schools and was remembered by colleagues, family and friends as a beloved teacher, son and brother. He and Kerns had become engaged and were renovating a family home together. Ohio Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy described the death as an "unconscionable tragedy," citing the suspect's immigration history and alleged intoxication.
