Missing Missouri Teen Found Dead: Four Arrested as Police Detail Alleged Abduction

Authorities in Randolph County, Missouri, have arrested four young adults after the body of 16-year-old Kayla Huff was found in a wooded area nearly a week after she was reported missing.

Kayla was reported missing by her family on May 6, according to a probable cause statement from the Randolph County sheriff’s office obtained by PEOPLE. Local station 13 KRCG reported that a civilian discovered her remains in a wooded section of the Rudolf Bennitt Conservation Area on Wednesday, May 13. The sheriff’s office later confirmed the recovery in a press release.

Allegations From Probable Cause Statements

Probable cause documents reviewed by investigators allege that Alayna Mason told several people she and at least one other person placed Kayla in the trunk of a vehicle, drove her to the conservation area, dragged and assaulted her, and that she shot the teen. The statements also say Alayna told others she carried Kayla’s body in the trunk and dragged it into the woods.

People familiar with Alayna reportedly told police that on May 5 — the day before Kayla was reported missing — Alayna put motor oil into the gas tank of Kayla’s vehicle. Christopher Hull is alleged to have accompanied Alayna and helped put the oil in the car, the filings say.

According to the same filings, Hunter Ames admitted to helping abduct Kayla on May 6 and said he gave Alayna a pistol after she told him she needed to "take care of" the person she had placed in the trunk. Ames and Hull each acknowledged discarding a baton that investigators suspect was used to assault Kayla; authorities say they recovered the baton from Hull’s residence. Julian Mason is also accused of participating in discarding the baton and of driving to the victim’s home with two other suspects.

Charges and Legal Status

As of Friday, May 15, none of the four arrested have been charged directly with causing Kayla’s death. Online court records show the following charges:

• Hunter Ames: Kidnapping and tampering with evidence.
• Christopher Hull: Kidnapping and tampering with evidence; authorities report the baton was recovered from his residence.
• Alayna Mason: Vehicle theft, firearm theft and escape/attempted escape from custody while under arrest for a felony.

The death has deeply affected the local community. A GoFundMe set up to assist Kayla’s sister described Kayla as "a cherished sister and a bright presence in her family's life." Comments posted in response to the sheriff’s office statement expressed shock and sympathy for the family.

Local outlet KOMU reported that a 17-year-old identified as Kayla’s boyfriend was also arrested in connection with the probe; the sheriff’s office did not confirm that report to PEOPLE. Investigators continue to develop the case and have said more charges may follow.
