Lee Gilley Timeline: Texas Man Charged With Killing Pregnant Wife Flees To Italy, Seeks Asylum

Lee Gilley, 39, is facing a capital murder charge in the October 2024 death of his wife, Christa Bauer Gilley, who was nine weeks pregnant when she was pronounced dead. Prosecutors say an autopsy found the cause of death was compression of the neck and back and that hospital staff observed bruising and facial trauma. Gilley was released on $1 million bond in October 2024 under conditions that included surrendering his passport and wearing an ankle monitor; prosecutors now allege he cut the monitor and fled the country.

2023: In pretrial filings, prosecutors say they will present evidence that Gilley had a sexual relationship with a woman in San Diego in or around 2023.

March 18, 2024: Prosecutors allege Gilley posted on Reddit that he was "bored" in his marriage and "seeking a college-aged female for a friends-with-benefits arrangement." These posts are cited in pretrial documents as context for the prosecution's case.

Oct. 7–8, 2024: Gilley called 911 on Oct. 7 to report his wife had overdosed; he told first responders he performed CPR. Court records say he later told police Christa was not suicidal and did not use drugs. Christa was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead on Oct. 8; court filings state she was nine weeks pregnant.

Oct. 11, 2024: After the Harris County medical examiner ruled Christa's death a homicide caused by compression of the neck and back, Houston police arrested Gilley on a capital murder charge that also references the fetus. Police stated hospital staff had observed bruising and apparent trauma to Christa's face.

Oct. 17, 2024: Gilley was released on $1 million bond with conditions including surrendering his passport and wearing an electronic monitor.

April–May 2025: Prosecutors allege Gilley communicated with the woman he is accused of having an affair with about plans to flee, methods to remove an ankle monitor, and ideas for obtaining a new identity, including marriage or a foreign identity document.

May 1, 2026: Federal authorities say Gilley cut off his court-ordered ankle monitor and disappeared, triggering an automated alert to Harris County Pretrial Services. Attempts to contact him were unsuccessful, and a federal complaint later charged him with interstate flight to avoid prosecution.

May 3, 2026: Gilley landed at Milan's Malpensa Airport, allegedly traveling on an Air Canada flight under the name Lejeune Jean Luc Olivier and presenting Belgian identification that Italian authorities later determined was forged. While facing deportation, he disclosed his true identity and acknowledged he was awaiting trial in the U.S., then applied for asylum in Italy.

May 4–12, 2026: Texas prosecutors, defense counsel and the presiding judge were notified that Gilley was in Italy. At a Turin hearing on May 11–12, Gilley said he fled to avoid execution and "relentless media persecution," professed his innocence and asked for Italian protection. His Italian attorney said he had no known ties to Italy.

"The Bauers are profoundly disappointed by the breakdown of the system," said family attorney Tim Ballengee, calling the escape "devastating" for Christa's family.

The Harris County District Attorney's Office has not announced whether it will seek the death penalty. A local judge has issued a gag order limiting public statements by attorneys and prosecutors. U.S. and Italian authorities are coordinating on possible extradition while the case remains pending.
