A Suffolk County grand jury has indicted 42-year-old Robert Schreiber after authorities say he broke into his ex-girlfriend’s Patchogue, N.Y., home and stabbed her 22-year-old son the morning after the couple split.
According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, the woman ended the relationship on April 17 and locked Schreiber out of the house. The following morning, at about 8 a.m., prosecutors say Schreiber entered the residence through an unlocked window while occupants were asleep.
Prosecutors allege that Schreiber "proceeded to the victim’s bedroom, kicked in the door, and stabbed him seven times throughout his head, neck and shoulder." Family members intervened, called 911 and helped the victim escape down the stairs.

An ambulance transported the injured man to NYU Langone Hospital, where he received numerous staples to close his wounds. Officers arrested Schreiber at the scene and, investigators say, recovered the knife used in the attack in his possession.
"This was a violent attack on a young man in his own home," said Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney. "Domestic violence does not always end when a relationship does, it often escalates. We will aggressively prosecute this defendant and seek justice for the victim and his family."
Schreiber has been indicted on multiple counts, including second-degree attempted murder, first-degree burglary, first-degree attempted assault, second-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child and second-degree harassment.
He is being held on $1,000,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on May 28. If convicted on the highest charges, Schreiber faces up to 25 years in prison.
