At least 11 people were killed and more than 30 others were injured when a tourist bus veered off a highway and overturned near the town of Amatlán de Cañas in Nayarit, Mexico, on May 1.
According to a statement from the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Nayarit, six victims were found dead at the scene and five more died after being transported to hospitals for treatment. The bus had been traveling from the state of Jalisco to a recreational center in Nayarit when it left the road and rolled onto its side.

Identified Victims: Authorities have released the names of several of the deceased. Officials confirmed five of the victims as Margarita Gutiérrez Villegas; Mario Reyna Chávez; Alejandro Lozano Morales, 47; Paola Núñez Flores, 33; and Martha Gutiérrez, 62. Investigators are working to identify the remaining victims.
Local authorities published a list of 31 people who received medical treatment at hospitals in the area. The injured ranged in age from 4 to 47, and included residents from both Amatlán de Cañas and Jalisco.

Emergency Response and Investigation: Emergency services from Nayarit and neighboring Jalisco responded immediately to the crash, joined by police, agents from the prosecutor’s office and forensic teams. Officials from both states have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
Photographs obtained by Reuters showed the white bus lying on its side and covered in mud on a hillside near Amatlán de Cañas, with passengers’ belongings scattered around the vehicle and protruding from broken windows. Video footage captured by TRT World also showed investigators examining the exterior of the overturned coach while yellow tape cordoned off the scene; one clip showed a window spattered with mud.
Authorities continue to provide updates as identifications are completed and as the investigation into the cause of the crash proceeds.
