What Happened
Authorities say the shooting occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 16. Caleb called 911 and told dispatchers an intruder had entered the home and shot his wife, Ashley, in the head while their daughters, ages 9 and 11, slept nearby. Body-camera footage released by law enforcement captured Caleb distraught at the scene, asking officers, “Is she gone?” and later becoming physically ill as investigators processed the house.

On Feb. 19, police arrested Caleb on charges that include aggravated murder; prosecutors later accused him of witness intimidation. Investigators have not disclosed all details that led to the arrest. Court records list the children and staff at Caleb’s church as potential witnesses. One coworker, Alleigha Botner, resigned after Ashley’s death, according to a pastor at the church.

Family, Friends and Community Response
Friends and family describe Ashley as warm, creative and devoted to making memories with her daughters. Last Valentine’s Day she surprised the girls with a homemade “Galentine’s” spa — fluffy headbands, hair styling, painted nails, cookie-baking and a screening of Cinderella — a tradition the family planned to repeat each year.

“If she could make a memory out of anything, she would,” said Kara Crawford, a friend of two decades. “We’re going to help Ashley’s girls become who she’d already started to raise.”
Ashley grew up in Tipp City, a small community near Dayton. She and Caleb met in college in Tennessee, married in 2010, and after several years in South Carolina settled in Tipp City in 2021. Caleb, who advanced to Hollywood Week on Season 12 of American Idol in 2013, worked as a worship pastor and also helped at Ashley’s father’s flooring company.

Legal Status and Next Steps
Caleb’s attorney has said the defense looks forward to defending the case. A trial is scheduled for May, and authorities continue to investigate. Ashley’s family has publicly said they trust the investigators’ decision to arrest Caleb.
