Turning Point USA CEO Erika Kirk, widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, has stepped back from public appearances after a widely shared video showed her leaving last weekend’s White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner in tears following a foiled intrusion by an armed man.
Charlie Kirk was assassinated on Sept. 10 while speaking at a college event in Utah. On Wednesday, Erika Kirk blamed ongoing political violence on the “radicalization” of Americans and posted on social media Monday: “Enough is enough.”
TPUSA spokesperson Andrew Kolvet said Erika Kirk was deeply shaken by the disturbance at the Washington Hilton and is taking time to be with family. “Erika is using this moment, I think, as kind of a reset — to refocus, spend time with her family, and take a pause,” Kolvet told the program Elizabeth Vargas Reports.
What Happened At The WHCA Dinner
Federal prosecutors say Cole Allen, a California man accused of breaching a security checkpoint on Saturday, was armed with multiple weapons and was allegedly targeting President Trump and members of his Cabinet. Allen was stopped before reaching the ballroom where the president was attending the press gala, but shots fired during the confrontation sent attendees scrambling for cover. President Trump and other officials were escorted safely out of the room.
“If we cannot get unanimity around the fact that political assassinations and political violence is not OK in America, then we are truly in trouble,” Kolvet said, urging a unified rejection of political violence.
Scheduling Notes And Reactions
Kolvet also addressed the cancellation of a previously scheduled event this week featuring Erika Kirk and Vice President J.D. Vance, saying the change was unrelated to the WHCA incident and was due to scheduling issues.
