Reporting That May Have Prompted The Statement

Burleigh pointed to recent reporting that connects Melania to modeling agent Paolo Zampolli, 56, and his former partner Amanda Ungaro. Zampolli — a presidential envoy who has been named in Department of Justice files related to Epstein — has denied any wrongdoing. The New York Times analysis of the DOJ material identified roughly 38,000 references that could be associated with the Trumps.

According to The New York Times, Ungaro was flown on Epstein's jet when she was 17 and later deported to Brazil after Zampolli allegedly requested Immigration and Customs Enforcement take her into custody. Ungaro has said she witnessed "highly compromising interactions over the course of 20 years" and has given interviews suggesting she may have relevant testimony.

Possible Motive and Next Steps

Burleigh suggested Melania’s statement reads in part like a preemptive legal warning aimed at potential witnesses. "[Melania is] stumbling over the words. And if you read them closely, it is 100% a legal threat to whoever is going to speak out," Burleigh said, specifically naming Ungaro as a possible source.

Ungaro has told reporters she would "absolutely" be willing to testify before the House Oversight Committee about what she knows regarding Epstein’s crimes.
