Ervin’s Response

Ervin defended his remark during the April 8 meeting, saying he meant “hot” to mean the student was “on a roll” because of the questions she was asking — not a comment on her appearance. He said that isolating a few seconds of a two-hour meeting changed the context and that he regretted the attention the clip garnered.

“When I mentioned she was hot, I meant she was on a roll. It was nothing to do with her appearance... I am sorry that this has overshadowed what would have been a bright moment for one of our students,” he said.

Records obtained by NBC affiliate WSMV show Ervin had previously been censured in 2009 for making what the board described as a “lewd, juvenile gesture of a sexual nature” during a classroom discussion — a fact that added to the community’s concern.
