Rex Heuermann, a former architect and father of two from Massapequa Park, N.Y., admitted on Wednesday, April 8 that he killed eight women, a confession relatives say has at last brought a measure of solace after years of unanswered questions.

At a news conference following the plea, Maureen Brainard-Barnes’s sister, Melissa Cann, stood with other family members and made clear the moment was about remembering the women whose lives were taken, not about the man responsible. Cann described the plea as validation of a long search for truth and accountability.

“Nineteen years,” Cann said. “I lived in this space between heartbreak and hope. Throughout these years, I searched for answers, for truth, for justice. This has been a long journey of hope, hope that one day we would stand here and say her name with justice beside it. Today, that long, painful journey brings us to this moment. Our mission, our promise to Maureen, is finally met with accountability.”
Cann added, “Justice has finally found its way to you.” She said Maureen’s voice was never silenced, her story will not be forgotten, and the family’s love endures despite the tragedy.
Victims and Timeline
Heuermann admitted to killing Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Amber Costello, Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack, Sandra Costilla and Karen Vergata. The victims’ remains were recovered at different times between 1993 and 2011:

- Sandra Costilla — discovered in 1993 by hunters in North Sea, Long Island.
- Karen Vergata — disappeared in 1996; remains found on Fire Island on April 20, 1996, with additional body parts located on Tobay Beach on April 11, 2011.
- Valerie Mack — partial remains found Nov. 19, 2000, wrapped in plastic and duct tape; more remains surfaced later near Gilgo Beach.
- Jessica Taylor — partial remains found in 2003; additional remains discovered near Gilgo Beach in 2011.
- The “Gilgo Four” — Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes and Amber Costello — whose remains were discovered along Ocean Parkway on Long Island in 2010; they had worked as escorts and went missing between 2007 and 2010.
Investigation and Evidence
The killings went unsolved for years until Heuermann was arrested in 2023. Investigators tied him to the four victims found along Ocean Parkway through burner phones used to arrange meetings and DNA evidence, including hairs found on some of the victims. Prosecutors also say he repeatedly viewed images of victims and their families online and monitored coverage of a task force formed to probe the killings.
The guilty plea brings legal accountability for families who have pursued answers for decades. Many relatives say the moment is both painful and consoling — a reminder of the lives that were lost and the resilience of the people who remember them.
