Shooting Near Shoppette at Holloman Air Force Base Kills 1, Injures 1; Lockdown Later Lifted

One person was killed and another was wounded in a shooting near the Shoppette, the convenience store at Holloman Air Force Base in southern New Mexico, military officials said. The base was placed on lockdown at about 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, after reports of an active shooter, but the lockdown was later lifted after authorities cleared the installation and determined it was safe.

Local news outlets KTSM and KOAT, as well as the Associated Press, reported that emergency personnel responded to the scene. KTSM said the injured person was transported to a hospital for treatment; no further medical details have been released.

“Emergency personnel are responding to the situation and there is no threat at this time,” the 49th Wing said in a statement, according to the AP.

Authorities have not released the identities of either person who was shot, and officials have not named a suspect. Military officials did not immediately say whether any individuals involved were active-duty service members.

In a Facebook post, the 49th Wing said the Shoppette would remain closed "until further notice." Investigators and base authorities are continuing to work the scene and will provide updates through official channels and local media as information becomes available.
