ATHENS, March 10 — Western countries have stepped up naval and air deployments in the eastern Mediterranean following a March 2 Iranian-made drone strike on a British military base in Cyprus. Nations are reinforcing Cyprus and surrounding sea lanes with carriers, destroyers, frigates, fighter jets and air‑defence systems amid heightened tensions tied to the Iran conflict that began on Feb. 28.
United States
The USS Gerald R. Ford, the U.S. Navy's largest aircraft carrier, called at Souda Bay on Crete about two weeks ago and then sailed further east escorted by missile-capable support ships.
Britain
Britain deployed Wildcat helicopters equipped with counter-drone systems on March 6 and has positioned additional F-35B jets at its Cyprus base to augment Typhoon FGR4 fighters already there. London has also announced plans to send the destroyer HMS Dragon to reinforce operations around the island.
France
France sent the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle to the eastern Mediterranean with roughly a dozen escort vessels. The carrier group was off Crete and was reported headed toward Cyprus, while another French frigate called at Souda Bay.
Germany
The German navy frigate FGS Nordrhein-Westfalen arrived in the Cyprus region on March 8 to contribute to regional security efforts.
Greece
Greece dispatched the new Belharra-class frigate Kimon and the MEKO 200 frigate Psara — the latter fitted with the Centauros anti-drone system — to help secure Cypriot airspace. Athens also sent four F-16 Viper fighters to western Cyprus and deployed a Patriot air-defence battery on Karpathos island to bolster protection for eastern Crete and nearby approaches.
Italy
Italy deployed the frigate Martinengo as part of a coordinated mission with EU partners. The ship was reported at Souda Bay and expected to head toward Cyprus.
Spain
Spain sent the Álvaro de Bazán-class frigate Cristóbal Colón, one of its most advanced warships, which called at Souda Bay ahead of further operations in the eastern Mediterranean.
Netherlands
The Netherlands is preparing to dispatch the air-defence frigate HNLMS Evertsen to the region to strengthen collective air and sea defences.
Turkey
Turkey has deployed six F-16 fighter jets and additional air-defence systems to northern Cyprus, the breakaway Turkish Cypriot area recognized only by Ankara, increasing tensions on the island.
Context: These movements reflect an international effort to deter further escalation, protect bases and civilian infrastructure in and around Cyprus, and ensure freedom of navigation in a strategically vital part of the Mediterranean.
