Indonesian police have identified dismembered remains found on a Bali beach as 28-year-old Ukrainian tourist Ihor Komarov after DNA matched samples from his mother. Komarov was reportedly abducted on Feb. 15 in the Jimbaran resort area while riding a motorbike. Police arrested the car renter, who named six foreign suspects believed to have fled Indonesia; international red notices have been requested as investigators probe motive and alleged ransom demands.
Dismembered Remains on Bali Beach Identified as Kidnapped Ukrainian Tourist
Indonesian police confirmed on Friday that decomposing and mutilated human remains found on a Bali beach have been identified by DNA as those of a 28-year-old Ukrainian tourist, Ihor Komarov.
Bali police spokesman Ariasandy told reporters in Denpasar that DNA from the dismembered body was matched with samples provided by the victim’s mother. Although the spokesman did not speak the victim’s name aloud at the briefing, he displayed a document showing Komarov’s name and date of birth.
Authorities say Komarov was abducted on February 15 in the Jimbaran resort area while riding a motorbike with a friend. Witnesses reported a group of assailants forced him into a car and left his companion behind; the companion later filed a police report.
In the days following the abduction, locals discovered body parts on a nearby beach and beside a river. Police arrested the man who had rented the vehicle used in the attack; he has named six others, all described by investigators as foreign nationals and now wanted on charges including kidnapping and aggravated assault.
All six named suspects are believed to have left Indonesia. Bali police have requested international assistance, asking authorities to issue red notices to locate and arrest them. "Some carried out the kidnapping; there may be others who subsequently committed abuse," Ariasandy said. He added that several suspects may hold multiple passports and that passport verification is being carried out abroad.
Local media reports — which have not been confirmed by police — say Komarov (sometimes spelled Igor) was the son of a wealthy Ukrainian businessman and that kidnappers demanded millions in ransom. Police say the motive remains under investigation and have not confirmed the ransom claims.
"All of them are foreign nationals with passports that may number more than two. Some have two or three passports. Verification is being carried out abroad," Ariasandy said.
Investigators continue to probe the case and are coordinating with international agencies to trace the suspects and establish a clear motive. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact Bali police.
