U.S. Contractor Arrested in Saint Martin After Alleged $46M Cryptocurrency Theft
A federal contractor, John Daghita, was arrested Wednesday night on the island of Saint Martin after being accused of stealing $46 million in cryptocurrency from the U.S. Marshals Service, the FBI said.
Photos released by the FBI and Saint Martin police show Daghita being led away in handcuffs with a swimming pool visible in the background. Investigators also published images of a suitcase stuffed with cash surrounded by computer flash drives and a passport.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the arrest followed a coordinated operation with the International Cooperation Team Serious Crime Unit of the French Gendarmerie National in Saint Martin and the Groupe d'intervention de la Gendarmerie nationale in Guadeloupe.
"The FBI will continue working around the clock with our international partners to locate, arrest and hold accountable those who defraud American taxpayers, wherever they try to hide," Patel said on social media.
Authorities have not yet explained how Daghita allegedly obtained access to the digital currency, and they did not immediately specify what charges he faces or whether extradition proceedings are planned. The investigation remains active as law enforcement continues to gather evidence.
