WASHINGTON, Feb. 20 — The U.S. Department of Transportation said Friday it will issue new rules requiring that all commercial truck driver testing be conducted in English and pledged a vigorous, nationwide crackdown on fraudulent commercial driver training schools and companies.
USDOT announced it will end self‑certification for commercial truck driving schools after uncovering hundreds of programs that failed to meet legal requirements. The department said the change will tighten oversight of training programs and ensure consistency in testing standards.
The move builds on prior steps by the Trump administration aimed at addressing concerns about commercial drivers who do not speak English. USDOT said it will also pursue enforcement actions against schools and employers that submit falsified records or otherwise evade safety and training regulations.
Officials say the measures are intended to protect public safety by ensuring drivers can understand safety-critical instructions and testing procedures. The department has not yet released the full text of the new rule or a timeline for implementation.
