21-Year-Old Marine Declared Dead After 72-Hour Search Following Fall From USS Iwo Jima

Lance Corporal Chukwuemeka E. Oforah, 21, a U.S. Marine from Florida, was declared dead after falling overboard from the USS Iwo Jima during operations in the Caribbean, the II Marine Expeditionary Force said.
According to a service news release, Oforah went overboard on the evening of Saturday, Feb. 7. After an "extensive" 72-hour search and rescue effort, authorities pronounced him dead on Tuesday, Feb. 10. An investigation into the circumstances of his death is ongoing.

Oforah enlisted in the Marine Corps in October 2023. He graduated from Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, in February 2024 and completed the School of Infantry at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was assigned as an infantry rifleman to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment.
"The loss of Lance Cpl. Oforah is deeply felt across the entire Navy-Marine Corps team," Colonel Tom Trimble said in a statement. "He will be profoundly missed, and his dedicated service will not be forgotten."
Operational Context
The USS Iwo Jima has been reported by multiple news outlets to be a central asset in Operation Southern Spear, a campaign that began in September 2025 aimed at countering drug-trafficking activity at sea. Media reports have said the operation has included strikes on alleged drug-smuggling vessels and, according to some outlets, was connected to the reported capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January 2026; those specific claims have been attributed to news reports and remain subject to official confirmation and further reporting.
The II Marine Expeditionary Force stated that a formal inquiry is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding Oforah's death. The Marine Corps has not released additional details pending the conclusion of the investigation.
