Michael McKee, a former surgeon, has been extradited from Illinois to Columbus and faces four counts of aggravated murder and one count of aggravated burglary in the Dec. 30 slayings of Spencer and Monique Tepe. Investigators tied McKee to a vehicle seen near the scene and recovered multiple firearms from his residence; a preliminary NIBIN ballistic match reportedly links one recovered weapon to the homicides. Three spent 9mm shell casings were logged from the crime scene. McKee waived extradition and remains jailed pending further court action.

A former surgeon, Michael McKee, has been extradited from Illinois to Columbus, Ohio, and is jailed on upgraded charges after authorities allege he fatally shot dentist Spencer Tepe, 37, and his wife Monique Tepe, 39, at their Weinland Park home on Dec. 30.

Arrest and Extradition: McKee was arrested on Jan. 10 and waived extradition during a Jan. 12 hearing while detained at the Winnebago County Jail in Illinois. He was transferred to the Franklin County Jail and booked into the James A. Karnes Corrections Center. No next court date was listed online at the time of the report.

Ohio dentist Dr. Spencer Tepe and his wife, Monique Tepe, were found shot to death inside their home in Columbus, Ohio on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2025.

Charges: A Franklin County grand jury returned an indictment charging McKee with four counts of aggravated murder, each carrying firearm specifications, and one count of aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony. Three of the aggravated murder counts include specifications alleging the use or display of an automatic firearm or silencer; the fourth alleges a firearm was displayed or brandished.

Investigation and Ballistics

Police say investigators linked McKee to a vehicle that arrived in the Tepes' neighborhood shortly before the killings and left soon after; that vehicle was later located in Rockford, Illinois, and investigators found evidence connecting it to McKee. Officers recovered multiple firearms from McKee's residence. Authorities reported a preliminary ballistic link through the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) tying one of those firearms to the scene.

Police records show three spent 9mm shell casings were recovered at the home, logged into evidence and placed in the Columbus police property room. The investigation is ongoing, and officials have not yet confirmed whether any recovered firearm was legally obtained.

Victims and Personal Background

One of the couple's friends discovered Spencer and Monique dead in their home on Dec. 30 and placed a 911 call reporting the bodies. In a recording of that call, the caller says:

"There's a body. Our friend wasn't answering his phone. We just did a wellness check. We just came here, and he appears dead. He's lying next to his bed, off of his bed in this blood."

Court records show McKee and Monique were married on Aug. 22, 2015, and their marriage lasted about seven months. At the time Monique filed for divorce, McKee was completing his medical residency at Virginia Tech Carilion Clinic and she described the marriage as one of "incompatibility." Family members of the Tepes have mourned the loss; relatives said the couple had plans to mark their fifth wedding anniversary the following month.

Next Steps: Prosecutors have filed the indictment and law enforcement continues to process forensic evidence. Further court proceedings and investigatory updates are expected as the case moves forward.
