On The View, Mayor Zohran Mamdani was questioned about social-media posts from Cea Weaver, his appointee to lead the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants, and other recent hires. Mamdani said New Yorkers should judge him by his public statements and emphasized his goal of affordability for tenants, homeowners and aspiring owners. He highlighted early wins for the tenant office — including roughly $30 million in guaranteed repairs — and repeated his stance on abolishing ICE while acknowledging separate criticism over comments about antisemitism.
Mayor Mamdani Pressed Over Appointee's 'Homeownership' Comment on The View — He Defends His Team and Record

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was pressed on Tuesday's episode of The View about past social-media posts by Cea Weaver, his pick to lead the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants, as well as remarks from other recent hires. Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin raised the posts and asked what message the comments send to New Yorkers and how the mayor planned to respond.
Mamdani's Response: The mayor urged New Yorkers to judge his views by his public statements as mayor. "If you want to know my views or my opinions, you’ll find them in my words as the mayor of New York City," he said, adding that his priority is making the city affordable for tenants, homeowners and those who aspire to own homes.
Office To Protect Tenants — Early Action: Mamdani described recent actions by the newly formed Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants. He said the administration hired an executive director 20 days earlier and, in that short time, pursued legal action against a landlord with an extensive record of violations, securing roughly $30 million in guaranteed repairs to address thousands of violations. "Sometimes when a politician tells you this, it sounds intangible... It just sounds like stats and statistics that you’ll never feel and know," he said, stressing the tangible impact of those interventions.
Controversial Posts By Cea Weaver: Cea Weaver, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), has drawn attention for several posts and a video that went viral. A screenshot of an Aug. 21, 2019 post shows Weaver writing:
"private property including and kind of ESPECIALLY homeownership is a weapon of white supremacy masquerading as 'wealth building' public policy."An earlier post dated Dec. 18, 2017 urged followers to "elect more communists." In a March 2021 DSA video, Weaver argued that property has long been treated as an individualized good rather than a collective one and suggested moving toward shared-equity models.
Wider Context: Mamdani has also faced criticism from the Jewish community over his comments disputing a widely used definition of antisemitism tied to some of his administration's early executive orders. During the interview he reiterated his long-expressed support for abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a politically charged position he has championed previously.
Administration's Stance: Mamdani emphasized that his administration’s policies and enforcement actions will define the city's direction more than isolated social-media posts by staff. He framed the tenant office's enforcement successes as evidence of a focus on concrete results for New Yorkers.
