Russell Brand Charged With Additional Rape And Sexual Assault Counts, To Appear In Court Jan. 20

British police announced on Tuesday that comedian and actor Russell Brand has been charged with an additional count of rape and a further count of sexual assault. The Crown Prosecution Service authorized the new charges, which relate to allegations made by two women.
Background And Previous Charges
These new charges come on top of five accusations announced in April involving four other women: two counts of rape, one count of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault. The allegations span a period of more than two decades.
Court Dates And Legal Status
Brand, 50, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on January 20 in connection with the latest charges. A trial on the earlier set of charges is scheduled to begin at Southwark Crown Court on June 16. Brand pleaded not guilty in May to the five original charges and remains legally innocent until proven guilty.
Investigation And Public Comments
The initial investigation began in September 2023 after allegations aired on Channel 4’s “Dispatches” programme and were reported by The Sunday Times. Reuters has attempted to contact Brand for comment.
After the April charges were announced, Brand said he had been "a fool and a sex addict" in his younger years but added: "what I never was, was a rapist."
This story is developing and further updates will follow as the case proceeds through the courts.
