Novyrose "Novy" Mejia, a nurse who worked at UC Davis and the Sacramento VA Medical Center, died after being struck by a vehicle outside the VA emergency entrance on Dec. 13, authorities and hospital officials said.
The incident occurred when a driver pulled into the parking lot near the emergency room entrance and struck Mejia as the vehicle entered the lot. She fell, hit her head on the pavement and was initially treated in the VA emergency department before being transferred to UC Davis Medical Center for further care, where she later died.
"UC Davis Health grieves the loss of Novyrose Mejia, a cherished nurse known for her dedication to patients and her family," the hospital said. "Her hospital colleagues describe her as hardworking and compassionate — a devoted advocate for those in her care."
The VA Sierra Pacific Network, represented by spokesperson Armenthis Lester, offered the agency's "deepest condolences" to Mejia's family. Colleagues and community members remembered her as a devoted nurse, wife and mother of two sons.
A GoFundMe page set up to support Mejia's family described her as "rooted in faith, compassion, and service," and noted her commitment to patient care. As of Dec. 17, the fundraiser had raised more than $34,000 to help cover medical bills and funeral expenses.
Local law enforcement — including the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office and the Rancho Cordova Police Department — are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision. Officials had not released additional details about the driver or any potential charges at the time of reporting.
The Sacramento community and Mejia's colleagues continue to mourn her loss and support her family during this time.
