Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene criticized Donald Trump for what she called a “classless” response to the fatal stabbings of Rob Reiner and his wife, saying the president should have shown compassion rather than politicizing the tragedy. The Reiners’ son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with first-degree murder. Trump’s comments—calling Reiner deranged and claiming “Trump Derangement Syndrome”—drew bipartisan condemnation. Greene, who is resigning next month after losing Trump’s endorsement, also highlighted concerns about drug abuse and mental health in the case.
Marjorie Taylor Greene Calls Trump’s Reaction to Rob Reiner Killings “Classless,” Urges Compassion
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) sharply criticized former President Donald Trump for what she called a “classless” response after filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home.
The Reiners' son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with first-degree murder in the killings. In remarks on Monday, Mr. Trump suggested Reiner suffered from “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and later referred to him as “a deranged person,” comments that drew widespread condemnation from across the political spectrum.
Speaking to CNN’s Kaitlan Collins on Tuesday’s edition of The Source, Greene said the president’s tone was inappropriate and unbefitting the office. “Even if you don’t agree with Rob Reiner politically, there was no reason for his statement,” she told Collins.
“I thought that statement was absolutely, completely below the office of the president of the United States. Classless. And it was just wrong,” Greene said. “That was a — it’s a tragic murder. It’s a family ripped apart.”
Greene added that media reports she had seen pointed to drug abuse and mental illness as important contexts in the case. “Many families across America deal with family members who are drug addicts or who have mental health issues,” she said. “I think the president should have responded with compassion and talked about those issues rather than making it about politics.”
Greene is scheduled to resign from Congress next month after Mr. Trump withdrew his endorsement and publicly called her “wacky.” The two have clashed in recent months over several issues, including aid to Israel and Ukraine, H‑1B visa policy, and the release of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. Greene signed a House discharge petition to force a vote on some Epstein-related records; the Trump administration has until Dec. 19 to produce certain documents regarding the deceased convicted sex offender.
