A 53-year-old Belizean pastor, Julian Bol, was killed early on Nov. 29 when a wooden house being moved on a trailer became dislodged and struck his van on the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway near San Juan Village. Bol’s blue passenger van was found about 800 feet from the house; he "appeared to have died on impact." A 13-year-old passenger was uninjured. Police are investigating and will check whether the transporter complied with wide-load permit conditions.

Julian Bol, a 53-year-old pastor from Maya Mopan in Belize’s Stann Creek District, was killed in a tragic traffic accident in the early hours of Nov. 29, just hours before his son’s wedding ceremony.

Police say a wooden house being transported on a trailer became dislodged on the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway near San Juan Village and struck Bol’s blue passenger van. Officers who responded to the scene shortly before 5 a.m. found the damaged house and Bol’s van, which was located roughly 800 feet from the structure and showed extensive damage.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith said the driver of the towing vehicle attempted to warn an oncoming car by flashing his lights, but the vehicle continued and a collision was heard shortly thereafter. “The officers observed a damaged wooden house that had become dislodged from a trailer that was transporting it,” she said.

Bol “appeared to have died on impact,” police reported. A 13-year-old passenger in the van was uninjured. Local reports indicate Bol had been en route to pick up cooks for his son’s wedding when the disaster occurred.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the crash and will determine whether the person transporting the house complied with the conditions of the wide-load permit issued for the move. The inquiry remains open as investigators continue to interview witnesses and examine the scene.
