A long-dormant investigation into a 2006 death at Angels Landing in Zion National Park has been revived after prosecutors said new evidence warrants reclassification of the case as murder.
On August 22, 2006, hikers encountered David Vander Meer descending Angels Landing appearing injured. Vander Meer told multiple people and investigators the same account: he and his wife, Bernadette Vander Meer, left their hotel in the pre-dawn hours, bicycled to a trailhead, and hiked to the summit to take photographs. He said he briefly turned away to move backpacks, heard a scream, and when he looked back Bernadette had fallen from the cliff.
Bernadette’s death was initially ruled accidental in part because Vander Meer’s story remained consistent across interviews. Two decades later, however, the Washington County Attorney’s Office reopened the matter after learning Vander Meer had been involved in a long-term relationship with a woman who first met him as a minor while he served as a youth pastor.

New Allegations and Indictment
Prosecutors say the woman met Vander Meer when she was 14; the relationship reportedly became sexual when she was 16 and continued for years. According to charging documents, she told him two days before Bernadette’s death that she wanted to end the relationship. The couple reportedly married two years after Bernadette’s death; following a divorce in 2026 the ex-wife alerted authorities to the prior relationship.
In June 2026, Vander Meer was arrested in Nevada and indicted in Utah on charges that include murder and insurance fraud related to a roughly $600,000 life-insurance payout tied to Bernadette’s death. Prosecutors say the new evidence justified reopening the case and pursuing criminal charges.
While awaiting extradition back to Utah, Vander Meer died of self-inflicted injuries a few days after his arraignment. In a note he left behind, he continued to assert his innocence.
