Shopify suffered a widespread login outage on Cyber Monday, with reports beginning around 9:00 a.m. ET and peaking at about 11:00 a.m. ET, when Downdetector registered over 4,000 problem reports. The platform, which serves over five million merchants and processed nearly $300 billion in 2024 according to SEC filings, implemented a fix for its login authentication flow at 2:30 p.m. ET and began monitoring recovery. Merchants and customers expressed frustration at the disruption during one of the year's most important online sales days.

Shopify experienced a widespread login outage on Cyber Monday, leaving many merchants temporarily unable to access their admin dashboards and point-of-sale systems during one of the busiest online shopping days of the year.

Timeline

Reports of login failures began around 9:00 a.m. ET. Incident reports peaked at roughly 11:00 a.m. ET, when more than 4,000 users indicated problems on outage tracking site Downdetector. At 2:30 p.m. ET Shopify said it had implemented a fix to its login authentication flow and was monitoring the platform as services recovered.

Scope and impact

The Canadian company serves more than five million merchants and — according to filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission — processed nearly $300 billion in transactions in 2024. While Shopify is popular with small businesses for its ease of use, it also hosts major brands, so the outage affected a wide range of retailers. Merchants reported being unable to update product details, change pricing, or complete in-person sales via POS systems during the disruption.

Shopify's response

"We're aware of an issue with Admins impacting selected stores, and are working to resolve it. For the most up-to-date information, please refer to our status page at http://shopifystatus.com. Thank you for your patience."

In a later update Shopify stated:

"We have found and fixed an issue with our login authentication flow, and are seeing signs of recovery for admin and POS login issues now. We are continuing to monitor recovery."

Merchant reaction

Many merchants and observers expressed frustration online given the outage's timing on Cyber Monday. Sample reactions included:

"Shopify going down on Cyber Monday has got to be one of the biggest fails of the year."
"How embarrassing — Shopify has been down all morning on literally the biggest sales day of the year for online shops, specifically SMALL BUSINESSES. They should refund EVERYONE'S fees this month."
"Absolutely wild that it's been over 2 hours of Shopify Admin being down on Cyber Monday. I had almost everything planned and automated ahead of time, but many merchants are suffering, unable to edit prices or theme text."

Shopify's status updates and the visible recovery reduced immediate uncertainty, but the incident highlighted how concentrated platform outages can ripple across thousands of small and large retailers during peak shopping moments.

What is Cyber Monday? Cyber Monday falls on the Monday after U.S. Thanksgiving and is a major online shopping day when retailers offer heavy discounts and expect increased digital traffic.
