Time-Stamped Receipt Clears Utah Man in Colorado Murder Investigation

On Dec. 14, 2023, Anthony Holland, a Utah resident, was unexpectedly visited by police after Kristil Krug was found murdered in Broomfield, Colorado. Holland produced a time-stamped receipt showing he bought a sweatshirt at 12:16 p.m., an alibi that made a same-day trip to the crime scene impossible and led authorities in Utah to clear him. Holland said he felt compelled to make the purchase and suggested spiritual forces may have influenced his decision. Two days later, Kristil's husband was arrested and charged with stalking and murder.

On the afternoon of Dec. 14, 2023, Anthony Holland was at his home near Salt Lake City watching television when law enforcement arrived unannounced. Officers asked about a woman he once dated, Kristil Krug — news that stunned Holland, who had not spoken to her in decades.

Unknown to him at the time, 43-year-old Kristil Krug — a mother of three in Broomfield, Colorado — had been found murdered in her garage that morning at about 8:00 a.m. Within hours, investigators in Colorado asked Utah police to check on Holland, who lived roughly 500 miles from the scene.

Holland produced what proved to be an airtight alibi: a time-stamped store receipt showing he bought a sweatshirt at 12:16 p.m. on Dec. 14, a purchase that made a same-day round trip to Colorado impossible. Utah officers immediately cleared him of involvement.

“I honestly thought I was going to jail for something,” Holland said in an interview with reporter Peter Van Sant, adding that he had no idea what crime officers were referring to. When asked what prompted him to buy the sweatshirt that morning, he said, “I just got an urge. I need another one. I don't have enough.”

Holland also told the reporter he believes spiritual forces may have played a role in the events that led to his alibi, saying he thought either the victim or his late mother influenced his sudden decision to shop that day.

Two days after Krug's death, police arrested her husband, Dan Krug, charging him with stalking and murder. Holland still owns the sweatshirt; for him it has become more than clothing — a tangible reminder of how a single, ordinary purchase helped clear his name.
