FDNY Commissioner Tucker Says Mayor‑Elect Mamdani Was a ‘Factor’ in His Decision to Resign

Outgoing FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said Zohran Mamdani's mayoral victory was a factor in his decision to resign, effective December 19. Tucker cited ideological differences with the self‑described democratic socialist and said his identity as a Jewish New Yorker contributed to the choice. He also noted that Mamdani and his incoming team have not reached out to him or the FDNY since the announcement.

Outgoing Fire Department of New York Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said his choice to step down was a “complicated” decision in part prompted by the election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor. Tucker’s resignation is set to take effect on December 19; he announced it hours after the mayor‑elect’s victory. By contrast, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch will remain in her position.

Tucker said he and Mamdani — whom he described as a self‑identified democratic socialist — disagree on “some very fundamental things.” He also told reporters that his faith and identity as a Jewish New Yorker were among the factors influencing his decision to leave before the new administration takes office.

"Yeah, I think it's a factor, no doubt, and I don't want to tell you that it's the only factor, but I believe that the things that I have heard the mayor say would make it difficult for me to continue on in such a senior executive role in the administration."

Mamdani has faced criticism for past comments about defunding police, and his criticism of Israel has prompted backlash from opponents who accused him of antisemitism — allegations he has denied. Tucker described his departure as "a complicated emotional decision," and said that, ideologically, he and the mayor‑elect differ on important issues.

The commissioner said he will "very much" miss the job. He also revealed that Mamdani and the incoming administration have not contacted him or the FDNY since his announcement. "I haven't had any personal conversations with the mayor‑elect. I haven't heard from anyone in his incoming administration nor has the department," Tucker said, adding that he hopes the lack of contact reflects confidence in current operations rather than hostility toward the department.
