Report: US May Exclude South Africa From US-Hosted G20 Events, Elevate Poland for 2026 Summit

Key points: A U.S. administration source says South Africa may not be invited to G20 events the U.S. will host in 2026, a step that would be unprecedented in the forum's history. The reported decision follows Washington's boycott of the 2025 G20 in South Africa amid allegations U.S. officials call unfounded. Instead, Poland is expected to be offered an elevated role at the 2026 summit in Doral, Florida, as it presses for G20 membership.

A U.S. administration source told reporters the Trump team does not plan to invite South Africa to participate in G20 events that the United States will host in 2026. If confirmed, the move would mark the first time in the G20's more than 20-year history that a country is outright excluded from meetings the group hosts.

Why South Africa could be excluded

Officials say the decision follows Washington's earlier boycott of the 2025 G20 meeting in South Africa amid allegations — which U.S. officials describe as unfounded — that the South African government is committing genocide against White South Africans. South African officials have dismissed the allegations and called for formal communication from Washington before drawing conclusions.

Poland's elevated role

Instead of South Africa, the administration reportedly plans to invite Poland to participate at an elevated level at the 2026 gatherings. Poland has been actively pursuing closer ties with the G20: its leadership says the country's sustained economic growth and its position among the world's largest economies justify its aspiration for membership.

After a September meeting with the U.S. president, Karol Nawrocki said he was invited to attend the 2026 summit. The summit is scheduled for December 2026 at the Doral resort in Florida owned by the U.S. president. Commenting on the venue in September, the U.S. president described it as 'right next to the airport' and 'the best location. It's beautiful.'

Tensions between Washington and Pretoria

Relations between the United States and South Africa have deteriorated under the current administration. In March, the State Department declared South Africa's ambassador to the U.S. persona non grata and expelled him. In February, the administration suspended some aid to South Africa, citing concerns about discrimination against White farmers.

South Africa recently concluded its G20 chairmanship without U.S. participation in the ceremonial handover. South African presidential spokesman Vincent Magwenya said officials had 'heard similar speculation' but would treat the reports as unconfirmed until they received official communication.
